You’ve probably seen headlines recently about ChatGPT offering new capability for depth of information it stores from your chats. Hand in hand, a “fun” suggestions making its way around the internet is to ask ChatGPT what it knows about you.

You really should do this. Think about the rise of social media — over time, details of your personal life have become more and more public knowledge, often without your active participation. Friends can tag you in photos, creating a trail of your location over time. Reviews you leave provide your purchase history and other details. You might get mentioned in the news or activity sections on public websites for organizations you belong to. Your smart devices and fitness apps leave more virtual trails, as well as information about your lifestyle.

Now consider the AI version of this. If you’re interacting with ChatGPT, Perplexity, Gemini, or others on a regular basis, you’re undoubtedly sharing a ton of data about yourself. Even if you’re not telling your AI therapist about the skeletons in your closet, you’re constantly dropping bits and pieces that can be integrated into a big picture — which is exactly what AI engines do.

Is this bad? Not necessarily. But it could be. You don’t have any idea how much information from your chats, nor who the audience might be. In earlier posts I already talked about Gemini’s ability to share information versus ChatGPT’s assurances that everything is private.

Of course, 7 million users probably thought a company like 23AndMe had the utmost in cybersecurity, until their genetic and personal information was exposed in 2023.

Below I have a pretty simple prompt for you to try with your favorite AI. Later I’m going to post a more extensive prompt so you can really see what your future robot overlord knows about you, but start with this one.

Please give me a summary of the key things you know about me. Start with a general profile of me, then give me your observations of my defining characteristics, strengths, and weaknesses. Tell me what you know of my personal life, including family and friends. Also, tell me how far back in time your history of me starts. For this discussion I’d like you to only use information from our chat history, do not search for further information on the internet.
